We sat on his balcony and watched as each burst of light became prettier than the last. We couldn't sit next to each other because of the strange angle we had to sit at just to see them. My feet were snuggled a bit awkwardly in his lap, curling around the back of his chair. We agreed that despite the funny angle watching from the balcony was better than the crowds of people that we fought last year. When they were over we squeezed our chairs back together. He put his arm around me and I rested my head on his shoulder. We sat there quietly for a long time after the smoke had cleared and all the cars had gone home. We sat there quietly until it was silent in the neighborhood. Then we gathered our glasses and each other up and went inside.
